Free Recipes! Finally dishes your family will loveWelcome...Got picky eaters in your home...try this sure fire recipe and you'll see the kids scrambling to the table. Home made Sloppy Joes... . My husband just raved over the Sloppy Joes tonight...even while it was still simmering on the stove, he came out of the tv room and said...MMM, something sure smells good...I have like one of the best recipes in the universe for Sloppy Joes...my own version of Manwiches...I don't use catsup and I most certainly don't use Manwich sauce...but I suppose a person could if they like it...let me see how did I do it.
1 can Hunts Petite diced tomatos with onion...
there are tons of varieties of diced tomatoes from Hunts ...just pick one you like...also really good is the new Hunts diced tomatoes with olive oil...and something...can't remember.
1 to -2 pounds of hamburger meat
(depending on how many burgers you want to make...I use ground round/ground sirlon...it is the good stuff...it totally makes all the difference...if you use the cheap 99 cent stuff in the super roll, just to save a couple dollars it will taste bad and mess up your recipe.
(you can always serve the sandwiches with french fries and a small salad to bulk up the meal...just don't skimp on the meat quality.)
Cook the meat till just about done...drain well.
Add the following to your drained, cooked meat mixture.
Add 3/4 to one full can of Hunts diced, tomatos, juice and all...add one packet Sloppy Joe spice...usually in the spice isle...no name brand, is OK!
Add 2 packets of Taco Bell Mild or Medium hot sauce...the kind you get when you order food from their resteraunt...though the same thing may be available in a bottle in local grocers...
(although the Mild this is more sweet then hot, you can always omit the hot sauce if you are concerned that your child or family might have a sensitivity to hot sauce)
But, if you can stand it, go with the hotsauce, it makes all the difference.
1 tbsp. sugar: absolutely essential...as it cuts the acid in the canned tomatoes...without it, you'll end up with a very flat, yucky tasting sandwich.
Optional: One tbsp. Pace Picante sauce...flavor of your choice. (again, omit if your family is sensitive, instead opting to serve it on the side, for those who really want it.)
Optional: 1/2 cup finely diced or minced onion...hard to chop, worth the time, makes all the difference in the taste.
Stir thoroughly, making sure to coat the meat...it should look red and tomatoey...adding at least one tsp. salt, and 1/2 tsp. pepper...stir again.
Cover and simmer, for about twenty minutes...
Uncover, add salt, pepper...stir again.
Mixture may appear slightly soupy, but should not be excessively soupy, especially if it has cooked while covered.
Do a test taste...salt and pepper again, as needed.
Using a slotted spoon, to allow mixture to drain, briefly-- portion sloppy joe mixture onto butter toasted buns--top with shredded cheddar cheese (optional) and your favorite toppings...lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, honey mustard, etc.
Serve immediately as sauce will soften bread quickly.
To really kick it up a notch, sprinkle one half packet of Taco bell medium or mild hot sauce over top of each sloppy joe burger mixture (meat, not bread) before adding any additional condiment...
(omit this if your kids are sensitive to hot sauces)
You can also use the above recipe as your own home made spagetti sauce...just cook it up, adding an additional 1/3 to 1/2 can of tomatos at the beginning of recipe...for soupier texture. Increase pepper and salt for the spagetti sauce.
You can also boil or microwave macaroni, add cheesy mixture, and 1 cup shredded cheese, mix, thoroughly, and then add 1-2 cups of above meat mixture.
Stir thoroughly...and serve on a plate...top with shredded cheddar cheese or mozzerella...and bread sticks.
Or, quickly convert it into a casserole.
Layer meat mixture, cooked noodles, shredded cheese, twice, in a casserole dish...top with bread crumbs, and shredded cheese.
Bake in preheated oven at 375 degrees, 20-35 minutes, or until middle is heated through and cheese is bubby..
Plus, you can make your own home made burrittos with this Sloppy Joe Meat mixture...and they are so much more delicious than the Taco mix, or drive through variety...just spoon a couple tbsp. onto burrito shells, top with shredded Taco Cheese, and a few of your favorite toppings, wrap up, bake in preheated oven at 375 degrees for seven to ten minutes, until desired crispiness is acheived...and then turn oven off...top each burritto with a nice dollap of shredded cheese, and close oven door...the residual heat will melt the cheese into ooey, gooey, splendor, without overcooking the burritos...
And, if you have any leftovers, quickly convert them to chilli meat, by adding one tsp of chilli powder and garlic salt, and reheating...ad your canned kidney beans, chilli beans, one can Hunts tomatos and one packet of sugar (to cut the acidity from the canned tomatos)...stir thoroughly...salt and pepper to taste...stir in 1/2 cup Pace Picante sauce and 2-3 tbsp. Taco Bell Mild or Medium hot sauce.
Serve hot, with cresent rolls, or garlic bread, or cheese sandwiches.
Serve immediately with your favorite sides, toppings and chilled milk.
Quick tip:
The cold milk will help to keep the hot sauce from burning your mouth.
So, there it is...
You can adjust the salt and pepper to taste...but this recipe got me rave reviews tonight...from a guy who knows how to cook...it was a big compliment.
The taste will be richer than the traditional manwich...
Hope you like it...it was good...this meat mixture is the basis for soups too...
I'll tell you about my home made soups later.
